Equalities minister Harriet Harman has accused the BBC of "wasting a lot of talent" by not valuing older female newsreaders to the annoyance of viewers.

Labour's deputy leader claimed that female presenters on BBC news programming have to be around "ten years younger than the men" in order to continue featuring.

Speaking on the BBC's World This Weekend programme, Harman said: "It's essentially an old-fashioned attitude that thinks you can't value the experience and wisdom of an older woman."

The BBC has recently suffered widespread criticism for its treatment of older female presenters and talent following a series of high-profile scandals.

In July, Harman backed complaints over the BBC's treatment of Arlene Phillips, 66, claiming that the former Strictly Come Dancing judge was a victim of age discrimination when she was replaced by 30-year-old Alesha Dixon.

"I think that the broadcast media finds it possible to value the older man but I don't think they find it possible to value the older woman," Harman claimed in the interview.

"A former senior BBC executive said to me, 'The thing is, the way we saw it was that as male presenters got older they become an authority and as female presenters got older they became a problem'.

"To be a BBC news presenter as a woman you have to be ten years younger than the men. They should be very careful about it and I think they should be anxious and worried about it... and I think they're wasting a lot of talent and annoying a lot of viewers."

In 2007, the corporation was criticised for its decision to drop the then 58-year-old Moira Stuart from her usual Sunday morning slot.

However, BBC director general Mark Thompson recently insisted that the BBC does value older women. The broadcaster has also pledged to appoint a female newsreader aged over 50 in an effort to diffuse the row.
