The film tells the story ofWilliam Munny, an aging and retired gunslinger who takes on one morejob years after he had hung up his guns and turned to farming. A darkWestern that deals frankly with the uglier aspects of violence and themyth of the Old West, it stars Eastwood in the lead role, along withGene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris, Jaimz Woolvett, SaulRubinek and Frances Fisher. Eastwood dedicated the movie to formerdirectors and mentors Don Siegel and Sergio Leone. The film won fourAcademy Awards including Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Hackman),Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Picture. Eastwood himself wasnominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance, buthe lost to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman. Unforgiven was inducted intothe United States National Film Registry in 2004.In June 2008, AFIrevealed its "Ten Top Ten," the best ten films in ten "classic"American film genres after polling over 1,500 people from the creativecommunity.
