Daddy Long Legs (1955)
Daddy Long Legs is a 1955 Hollywood musical comedy film set in France, New York City, and the fictional college town of "Walston" in Massachsetts. It stars Fred Astaire, Leslie Caron, Fred Clark and Thelma Ritter, with music and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The screenplay was written by Phoebe Ephron and Henry Ephron, loosely based on the novel Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster. The film was directed by Jean Negulesco.
It was one of Astaire's personal favourites, largely due to the script which, for once, directly addresses the complications inherent in a love affair between a young woman and a man thirty years her senior. However, the making of it was marred by his wife's death from lung cancer. Deeply traumatised, Astaire offered to pay the production expenses already incurred in order to quit the project, but then changed his mind.
Wealthy American Jervis Pendleton III (Fred Astaire) has a chance encounter at a French orphanage with a cheerful 18-year-old resident, Julie Andre (Leslie). He anonymously pays for her education at a New England college. She writes letters to her mysterious benefactor regularly, but he never writes back; all she really knows about him is that she once saw his elongated shadow, hence her nickname for him, "Daddy Long Legs".
Several years later, he visits her at school, still concealing his identity. Despite their large age difference, they soon fall in love.

Bringing Up Baby (1938)
Bringing Up Baby is a 1938 screwball comedy directed by Howard Hawks and starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. It tells the story of a scientist winding up in various predicaments involving a woman with a unique sense of logic and a leopard named Baby. The supporting cast includes Charles Ruggles, Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Catlett, and May Robson.
Adapted by Dudley Nichols and Hagar Wilde from a story by Hagar Wilde, Bringing Up Baby was an infamous box office catastrophe, causing Hawks to be fired from his next RKO film (Gunga Din, also starring Cary Grant) and forcing Hepburn to buy out her contract. As time went on, however, the movie gained more and more attention and is now revered as a sophisticated classic decades ahead of its time, and it continues to generate revenue for Hepburn's estate.
David Huxley (Cary Grant) is a mild-mannered paleontologist beleaguered by problems. For the past four years, he has been trying to assemble the skeleton of a Brontosaurus but is missing one bone (an "intercostal clavicle"). To add to the stress, he is about to get married to a dour woman with a severe personality and must make a favorable impression upon a Mrs. Random, a wealthy woman who is considering donating one million dollars to his museum. The day before his planned wedding, David meets Susan Vance (Katharine Hepburn) by chance. She is a free-spirited young lady and, unknown to him at first, happens to be Mrs. Random's niece.
Susan's brother (Mark) has sent her a tame leopard from Brazil (despite the fact that leopards are Old World animals, and Brazil is jaguar territory), "Baby," which she is supposed to give to her aunt. Susan believes David is a zoologist rather than a paleontologist and she practically stalks him in order to get David to go to her country home in Connecticut to help her take care of Baby. Complications arise as Susan decides that she has fallen in love with David and she endeavors to keep him at her house for as long as possible to prevent him from marrying his colleague. At this point, the plot becomes further entangled as Susan's dog, George, steals and buries the last dinosaur bone that David needs to complete his Brontosaurus skeleton at the museum. Susan's aunt Elizabeth (Mrs. Random) arrives. She is unaware of who David really is because Susan has introduced him as a man named "Mr. Bone". Baby runs off, as do George and a decidedly untame leopard from a nearby circus that Susan and David had inadvertently let loose from its cage, thinking it was Baby. Now Susan and David must find Baby, George, and the dinosaur bone, while ensuring that Mrs. Random donates her million dollars to the museum. To accomplish this, they must first get out of the county jail, where they have been mistakenly locked up by a befuddled town constable.
Directed by Howard Hawks Produced by Cliff Reid, Howard Hawks Written by Dudley Nichols, Hagar Wilde Music by Roy Webb, Jimmy McHugh Cinematography Russell Metty Editing by George Hively Distributed by RKO Radio Pictures Release date February 18, 1938 (USA) Running time 102 min.

The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Code:
The Philadelphia Story is a 1940 romantic comedy film starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and James Stewart, and directed by George Cukor. Based on a Broadway play of the same name by Philip Barry, with screenplay by Donald Ogden Stewart and an uncredited Waldo Salt, the film is about a socialite whose wedding plans are complicated by the simultaneous arrival of her ex-husband and an attractive journalist. It is considered one of the best examples of a comedy of remarriage, a genre popular in the 1930s and 1940s, in which a couple divorce, flirt with outsiders and then remarry – a useful story-telling ploy at a time when depicting extramarital affairs was banned in American film.
The play was Hepburn's first great triumph after several movie flops which had led to her being labeled "box office poison", and she purchased the film rights to the play in order to control it as a vehicle for her movie comeback. The film was a great success.
The Philadelphia Story was nominated for six Academy Awards, and won two: Stewart for Best Actor and Donald Ogden Stewart for Best Adapted Screenplay. It was adapted in 1956 as the musical High Society, starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong.
In 1995, The Philadelphia Story film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

The Sting (1973)
Code:
The Sting is a 1973 caper film set in September 1936 and revolving around a complicated plot by two professional grifters (Paul Newman and Robert Redford) to con a mob boss (Robert Shaw). The story, created by screenwriter David S. Ward, was inspired by some real-life con games perpetrated by the brothers Fred and Charley Gondorff and documented by David Maurer in his book The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man.
The movie is divided into distinct sections with old-fashioned title cards with lettering and illustrations rendered in a style reminiscent of the Saturday Evening Post. The film is noted for its musical score - particularly its main theme melody, "The Entertainer", a piano rag by Scott Joplin, which was lightly adapted for the movie by Marvin Hamlisch. The film in turn encouraged a surge of popularity and critical acclaim for Joplin's work.
The film was a major box office success in 1973, taking in more than US$160 million. The film won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
Code:
Breakfast at Tiffany's is a 1961 American film starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, and featuring Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam, and Mickey Rooney. It was directed by Blake Edwards and released by Paramount Pictures.
Audrey Hepburn's portrayal of Holly Golightly as the naive, eccentric socialite is generally considered to be the actress's most memorable and identifiable role. She herself regarded it as one of her most challenging roles to play, as she was an introvert who had to play an extrovert. Hepburn's singing of "Moon River" helped gain her an Oscar for Best Song for composer Henry Mancini and lyricist Johnny Mercer. The film also featured what was arguably George Peppard's greatest acting role and the high point of his career. The film is loosely based on the novella of the same name by Truman Capote.
* Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly * George Peppard as Paul "Fred" Varjak * Patricia Neal as Mrs. Failenson/Emily Eustace (2E) * Buddy Ebsen as Doc Golightly * Martin Balsam as O.J. Berman * Orangey as Cat (trained by Frank Inn) * Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi * Alan Reed as Sally Tomato

The Third Man (1949) is a British film noir directed by Carol Reed and starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Trevor Howard and Orson Welles. The screenplay was written by novelist Graham Greene. Greene's novella of the same name, written in preparation for writing the screenplay, was published in 1950.
The Third Man won the 1949 Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, the British Academy Award for Best Film, and an Academy Award for Best Black and White Cinematography in 1950.
In 1999, the British Film Institute selected The Third Man as the best British film of the 20th century; five years later, the magazine Total Film ranked it fourth. The film also placed 57th on the American Film Institute's list of top American films, "100 Years... 100 Movies" in 1998, though the film's only American connection was its executive co-producer, David O. Selznick; the other two, Sir Alexander Korda and Carol Reed, were British. In June 2008, the AFI revealed its "Ten top Ten"—the best ten films in ten "classic" American film genres—after polling over 1,500 people from the creative community. The Third Man was acknowledged as the fifth best film in the mystery genre.

It's a Wonderful Life (1947)
Code:
It's a Wonderful Life (1947) is an American film produced and directed by Frank Capra and loosely based on the short story "The Greatest Gift" written by Philip Van Doren Stern.
The film takes place in the fictional town of Bedford Falls shortly after World War II and stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a man whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve gains the attention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers) who is sent to help him in his hour of need. Much of the film is told through flashbacks spanning George's entire life and narrated by Franklin and Joseph, unseen Angels who are preparing Clarence for his mission to save George. Through these flashbacks we see all the people whose lives have been touched by George and the difference he has made to the community in which he lives.
The film is regarded as a classic and is a staple of Christmas television around the world, although, due to its high production costs and stiff competition at the box office, financially, it was considered a "flop."
It's a Wonderful Life was nominated for five Oscars without winning any, but the film has since been recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, and placed number one on their list of the most inspirational American films of all time.

Point Blank (1967)
Code:
Point Blank is a 1967 crime film directed by John Boorman and starring Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson, adapted from the classic pulp novel The Hunter by Donald E. Westlake, writing as Richard Stark. Boorman directed the film at Marvin's request and Marvin played a central role in the film's development and staging.
Point Blank was dismissed by some U.S. critics as an average action film when first released, and was heavily criticized for its level of violence in an era when action and crime genre films were being increasingly viewed as simplistic vehicles for audience exploitation. In common with many crime films of the era, the film's Mafia-inspired crime syndicate became politically correct (The Organization), losing its ominous Italian appellation, and dropping all obvious Italian names and characters (except for lower-level thugs). In her 1967 New Yorker review of Bonnie and Clyde, Pauline Kael disparaged Boorman's movie with one sentence: "A brutal new melodrama is called Point Blank, and it is." Roger Ebert found the film somewhat interesting, writing in his review of the film, "as suspense thrillers go Point Blank is pretty good."
With the passage of time, the film is today considered a neo-noir classic. Its central focus on timeless themes of revenge, jealousy, and greed stand in contrast to trendier films of the era that focused almost entirely on the more trivial aspects of the decade's social and fashion trends, only to become quickly dated and irrelevant. David Thomson praises the film: "Point Blank is a masterpiece... iconographic... urban thriller... a crucial film in the development of cinema's portrait of... organized crime." And even Kael amended somewhat her earlier critique to later call Point Blank "intermittently dazzling".
Point Blank was loosely remade as the Hong Kong action film Full Contact (1992). It was remade again in Hollywood as Payback (1999).
* Lee Marvin as Walker * Angie Dickinson as Chris * Keenan Wynn as Yost * Carroll O'Connor as Brewster * Lloyd Bochner as Frederick Carter * Michael Strong as Stegman * John Vernon as Mal Reese * Sharon Acker as Lynne * James B. Sikking as Hired Gun

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)
Code:
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a musical film released in 1954. It was directed by Stanley Donen, with music by Saul Chaplin and Gene de Paul, and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The script (by Albert Hackett, Frances Goodrich, and Dorothy Kingsley) is based on the short story The Sobbin' Women, by Stephen Vincent Benét, which was based in turn on the Ancient Roman legend of The Rape of the Sabine Women. The film was a 1954 Oscar nominee for Best Picture.
The film is particularly known for the unusual choreography by Michael Kidd, which makes dance numbers out of such mundane frontier pursuits as chopping wood and (most famously) raising a barn.
Adam, the eldest of seven brothers, goes to town to get a wife. He convinces Milly to marry him that same day. They return to his backwoods home. Only then does she discover he has six brothers -- all living in his cabin. Milly sets out to reform the uncouth siblings, who are anxious to get wives of their own. Then, after reading about the Roman capture of the Sabine women, Adam develops an inspired solution to his brothers' loneliness . . . kidnap the women they want!
Donen had an uphill battle with the studio while making "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". The studio had so little faith, they continually cut "Brides" budget to put more money into the lumbering "Brigadoon." Sets and even cast members were loaned out to other movies. Brothers Russ Tamblyn and Jeff Richards, as well as part of the set can be seen in "Many Rivers to Cross."
On the 2004 DVD commentary, Stanley Donen states that the film was originally shot in two versions, one widescreen and another in normal ratio, because MGM was concerned that not all theatres had the capability to screen it. Despite the fact that it cost more than the widescreen version to make, he says, the other version was never used.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966)
Code:
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart.
Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251–183 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus and Mostellaria, it tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class. The title derives from the line that vaudeville comedians often used to begin a story: "A funny thing happened on the way to the theater".
The musical's original 1962 Broadway run won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book. A Funny Thing has enjoyed several Broadway and West End revivals and was made into a successful film. It is a popular choice for school and community theatre.
