As with many businesses, BSkyB cut its prices following the government’s reduction in the rate of VAT.

Most shoppers found that prices were reduced and satellite TV subscribers with Sky TV saw this reflected in their monthly payments.

But as Gordon Gekko said on Wall Street, “Christmas is over and business is business” and VAT rose from 15 per cent to 17.5 per cent on 1 January, which means an increase in cost.

It seems that the basic package will rise by around 50p, but those customers with additional packages could be paying up to £1 per month more, while those with HD and multi room will have more to pay.

Fortunately BSkyB is offering free broadband for six months to new HD customers, so there are still savings to be made.
