By now most people are used to seeing flat screen LCD TVs, but these televisions are heavy, not quite as heavy as a plasma screened TV, but still heavy enough.

In order to make the TV lighter the manufacturers will need to make the devices smaller or thinner and as consumers do not want tiny screens, then thinner it is.

By using LED backlighting the manufacturer is able to reduce the weight and thickness of the device.

The LG “Extreme Slim” will going on show at the CES in a few days, the 42 inch screen television will only be 2.6 mm thick and will weigh just 4 kgs, figures which would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago.

However to keep the TV slim, a separate tuner box is required.
